Ethics Policy
Last Updated: December 2025
Criminal Talk is committed to the highest standards of journalistic ethics. This policy outlines the ethical principles that guide our reporting.
Truth and Accuracy
We are committed to accuracy in our reporting. We verify information before publication, clearly label opinion and analysis separate from news reporting, do not manipulate images or audio in ways that distort the truth, and correct errors promptly and transparently.
Independence
Our journalists maintain independence from the subjects they cover. Staff members do not accept gifts, favors, or preferential treatment that could compromise their objectivity. We disclose any potential conflicts of interest and do not allow commercial interests to influence our coverage.
Fairness
We treat all individuals with fairness and respect. We give subjects of critical coverage an opportunity to respond, avoid stereotyping based on race, gender, religion, or other characteristics, present multiple perspectives on controversial issues, and respect the presumption of innocence in criminal matters.
Minimizing Harm
We recognize that our reporting can have real consequences for individuals and communities. We consider the impact of our coverage on victims, families, and communities, exercise caution when reporting on suicides, violence, and trauma, protect the identity of victims when appropriate, and are especially careful when covering minors.
Accountability
We are accountable to our readers and the public. We explain our journalistic processes when asked, acknowledge and correct mistakes, respond to legitimate complaints and criticism, and are transparent about our methods and sources.
Reporting on Criminal Cases
Given our focus on crime reporting, we adhere to specific ethical standards. We use precise legal terminology (suspect, defendant, convicted) appropriately, do not presume guilt before conviction, consider the impact of our coverage on fair trial rights, are sensitive to victims’ privacy and dignity, and exercise caution with graphic content and crime scene images.
